business objective
To conceptualize, launch and commercialize a financial data product, primarily focused upon airlines
Our solution
Cognition supported the client throughout the life cycle of the product, right from conceptualizing and launching to evolving and scaling it up.
- Conceptualization and Launch:This stage involved conducting an in-depth study on the aviation industry to evaluate the market need and benchmark similar peer products. This intel was used to design a differentiated financial data product, collating the most important financial and operational data elements. Our team of financial analysts then implemented our semi-automated financial spreading solution to deliver a like-to-like financial comparison for the prominent airlines.
- Evolution and Scale-up: Based on end-user feedback, Cognition worked with the client to develop a detailed roadmap, suggesting advanced data & analytics features and data visualization capabilities. To successfully manage peaks and troughs in data processing volumes due to irregular reporting cycles (especially for private airlines), we implemented a lean operational model supported by our sizable flexible resource pool.
Outcome
- In collaboration with the client, Cognition built an Excel-based financial model, which included approximately 2,000 input data fields (eventually scaling to 8,000 fields) and 3,000 calculated data fields to analyze critical financial parameters for more than 300 public and privately-held airlines.
- This backend model not only captures financial data but also covers multiple operational data points such as ASKs, RPK, fuel consumption, PAX numbers, fleet size and age, and block hours.
- Cognition’s APIs and web-based algorithms automatically scans for new financial data releases, which are then used to auto-populate our templates for further spreading and analysis. Post data update, our analysts produce qualitative airline overviews and commentaries to support the changes in quantitative data.
- We also support the product’s frontend through periodic software testing and content maintenance, as well as suggesting any upgrades to be undertaken from time to time.
